What this shortlist is built to reveal

Defensive midfield is a decision-making role before it is a tackling role. The best young sixes protect the centre, offer the next build-up angle and recognise when a forward pass is worth leaving their position. Raw recoveries can rise on weaker teams and passing accuracy can rise in safe possession, so neither number stands alone. We look for players who control what happens around the action: scanning before the receive, moving pressure, progressing without exposing the counter and arriving early enough that the defensive intervention does not have to become a rescue.

The board is a discovery tool. Open a profile to inspect minutes, role-specific percentiles, advanced evidence and data confidence before drawing a projection.

Read the space before the duel

Tackles and interceptions describe events, not the full job. Central access denied, second balls anticipated and counterattacks slowed can be just as important. The profile therefore pairs defensive involvement with role, team possession and the areas a player is trusted to protect.

Security must still move the game

A holding midfielder cannot give away the centre cheaply, but safe circulation is not automatically progression. The stronger prospects receive on useful angles, play through or around the first pressure and preserve a structure that can defend the next turnover.
